MN Pollution Control Agency Seeks Input on Burnsville Landfill Expansion

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is seeking public input on the environmental impact statement for its proposed 1.7-million-ton expansion of the Burnsville Sanitary Landfill. The statement describes the environmental impacts that the expansion would create, including all possible effects on groundwater, air quality, and property values.

All members of the public are invited to voice their opinions and give feedback on the statement until July 31st. Comments should be e-mailed to steve.sommer@state.mn.us.

Additionally, a virtual meeting will be held on June 23rd from 7:00 to 9:00 PM where members of the public can get involved and give their feedback directly to MPCA. The meeting link can be found here.

“We don’t take decisions to expand landfills lightly,” said MCPA assistant commissioner Kirk Koudelka in this article from Sun Thisweek. “The metro area is running out of landfill space to manage waste as our landfills fill up. Additional capacity is a short-term solution. We are also looking at the long-term, big picture on how to best manage our waste so it does not need to be landfilled.”
